Services were held Tuesday, April 24, 2001, at First Presbyterian Church in Jefferson for Jean Carol Miller, 91, longtime Jefferson resident.

Dr. Richard Glasgow, pastor of the church, officiated. Marilynn Hoskinson was organist for the congregational singing. Casket bearers were Harvey Swartz, Lynn Menz, Denis Goshon, Robert Olhausen, Daniel Benitz and Robert Barker. Interment was in Jefferson Cemetery.

Arrangements were handled by Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home in Jefferson.

Jean Carol Nelson was born Dec. 4, 1909, in Van Buren county near Keosauqua. She was the daughter of John Ernest Nelson and Grace Gertrude Barker Nelson.

Jean was baptized Oct. 29, 1911, and became a member of the nearby Mount Zion Presbyterian Church on Aug. 13, 1922. She graduated from Keosauqua High School in 1927. She attended the University of Iowa, meanwhile caring for both parents through terminal illnesses.

On June 6, 1939, she married Dirk William Miller of Bonaparte. That same week, she graduated from the university.

Jean and Dirk moved to Jefferson in 1940. Both were away during the war years, as she stayed with relatives in Omaha, Nebraska, while he served in the Navy. They returned to Jefferson after Dirk’s discharge.

Jean was a schoolteacher and a librarian. She taught in one-room schoolhouses in the 1930’s and remedial reading programs in the 1970’s; she catalogued and organized Jefferson’s first grade school library.

Jean joined P.E.O. in 1933 and belonged to numerous other organizations, including TTT and Ingleside.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Dirk in 1974, her sister Roberta Nelson Dorothy in 1977, and three brothers, Merle, Conley and Paul Nelson.

Survivors include her daughter, Jane Ann Miller and son-in-law Melvin Pritchett of Jonesville, VT; her son Michael Dirk Miller and daughter-in-law Rita Miller of Anchorage, AK; and three granddaughters, Heather, Sara and Phoebe.
