SHOCKING ACCIDENT

A Prominent Keosauquan Killed by Being Thrown From a Buggy.

Last Friday afternoon Abner W. Manning, a son of Hon. Edwin Manning, in company with Oscar McCrary, was returning in a buggy to Keosauqua from Troy. The team driven by them was very spirited and was considered dangerous.

As the started to descend Indian Creek hill, about four miles southwest of Keosauqua, one of the horses suddenly threw its head against its breast and instantly both started at full speed. The occupants of the buggy observed the sudden turn in the road at the foot of the hill and vainly endeavored to check the runaway beasts. Just as they turned at the corner of the road both men were thrown out of the buggy. Mr. Manning fell heavily, striking the ground with his head and side of his face. Mr. McCrary was thrown entirely over him and struck upon the bank of a ditch, afterwards rolling into it. He lay there unconscious for a short while. Mr. Manning was at once rendered unconscious by the fall and never recovered consciousness. A lady who chanced to be passing by saw the accident and hastened to inform the nearest resident, a Mr. Hoskins. Mr. Manning was conveyed to the Hoskins farm and a messenger was at once sent to Keosauqua for medical aid which arrived as soon as possible, but their efforts to aid him proved fruitless. He died at 11:30 o'clock the next morning.

[Abner W. Manning was born in Keosauqua, Iowa, September 27, 1863, and died December 5, 1896, being at the time of his death 33 years, 2 months and 8 days of age. He was married February 22, 1888, to Miss Maud Miller, who, with one son, Bates, survives him.]

Mr. Manning was one of the most enterprising men in Van Buren county, and was responsible in a large degree for the success of many of the enterprises of Keosauqua. He was one whom that town can ill afford to spare.

The funeral services took place from his late residence conducted by Rev. Perkins. The Knight Templars, of which deceased was an honored member, performed their ritualistic service and consigned the remains to the earth.
