VOLUNTEER SOLDIER DIES

C. N. Bennett Succumbs to Disease Contracted in Camp

For the past several weeks Bonaparte people have been watching the condition of our only soldier boy who went to the front, and who contracted that dread ailment, typhoid fever, at Jacksonville, Florida, while in the service of his country. At times, it seemed he would recover; but Fate decreed otherwise, and early Sunday morning dissolution occured [sic].

[Corwin Nelson Bennett was born near Vernon, Iowa, June 23, 1863. His home was made in Van Buren Co. most of his life, living in Vernon and Bonaparte, with his parents and afterwards with his sister, Mrs. Hart. He enlisted in the 50th Iowa Co. G. Vol. Inft., July 7, 1898. Remaining at Jacksonville, Florida, until he came home on furlough reaching here Sept. 23, 1898. He died Oct. 16, 1898 aged 35 years 3 months 23 days.

The funeral occurred from the M. E. church in Bonaparte, Oct. 19, 1898, Rev. G. W. Barber, of Farmington, conducted the services, and assisted by Rev. W. H. Scofield.

The interment took place at the Vernon cemetery, where the remains of the father and mother of the deceased repose.]

The funeral was conducted by Napoleon Lodge, No. 309, Knights of Pythias, of which deceased was an honored member, and a goodly number of the G.A.R. post of this place marched as an escort. The church was appropriately decorated with flags, bunting and flowers. Rev. Schofield made a very fitting prayer, and Rev. Barber's brief discourse was most timely.
