William Van Dorn was born in Ohio, February 10, 1832, and died at Bonaparte, Iowa, September 5, 1900, aged 68 years, six months and 25 days. He came to Iowa in 1855 and was united in marriage with Sarah O'Kane, July 3, 1857. To this union was born one child, Mary Anna, with whom he resided at the time of his death. His companion died January 4th, 1900.
Mr. Van Dorn was among those who moved to Idaho in 1862, remaining there some time. Several years after returning to Bonaparte he engaged in the grain business, and was later a partner of T. H. Hopkins in the boot and shoe business here, retiring from that business about 15 years ago. He was last engaged in the agricultural implement business with his son-in-law, Phil Eich. He had been in poor health for several years past, but his death was not expected so soon.
He united with the Presbyterian Church in 1898. He had been a member of the Masonic fraternity since November 23rd, 1858, and a member of Lafayette Chapter R. A. M., since 1870.
The funeral occurred from the residence of Phil Eich, Friday afternoon, conducted by his former pastor, Rev. W. H. Scofield, of Middletown, and the burial service was under the auspices of Bonaparte Lodge, No. 73, A. F. and A. M., of which order deceased was a member. The pallbearers were: W. P. L. Muir, A. McDonald, A. Wilken, of Keosauqua; R. Walter, of Vernon; J. W. W. Ferris, a Farmington; and J. F. Bailey, of Bentonsport.
