Samuel M. Clark of Keokuk, a one of the greatest editors of Iowa, died last Saturday night at his home. He died of a complication of diseases. Mr. Clark has been identified with the Gate City, one of Iowa's great papers, for 36 years, and acted as chief editorial writer for a quarter of a century. We doubt if there was a writer in the west who was superior to him. His versatile style on political, religious moral and economical subject, made him a favorite with all readers. He had force, gained by his great knowledge. From our youth did we like to read Mr. Clark's great editorials. He used common, plain Saxon language to express his thoughts and this made him so great a favorite. His writing will make a classic book. He was born Van Buren county in 1842. His father was a minister of the Methodist church. He was a self-made man, having been a student from his early youth. Iowa loses one of her ablest men by his death. He is survived by one son, his wife having preceded him in death some years ago. Our people knew Mr. Clark, for he delivered addresses here. His love was to address graduating classes. To them he gave the fullness of his knowledge in advice. Mr. Clark served as commissioner of education to the Paris exposition in 1889. He served his district in congress in 1894 and in 1896. He was truly a great man and of unblemished character.
