VAN BUREN PIONEER DEAD
Dr. Gideon Bailey Expired at Age of Ninety-Four

The funeral of Dr. Gideon Bailey occurred at Vernon Sunday. Doctor Bailey was one of the oldest man in southeastern Iowa, being in his ninety-fifth year at the time of his death.

He was one of the pioneers of Iowa and was a member of the first Territorial Assembly. While he was a member of that body he framed the first school law of the territory. He was an old school physician and practiced successfully for a great many years. Doctor Bailey was a well-educated man and retained his mental faculties up to the time of his death. He owned a large farm on the river near Vernon, where he passed the last years of his life in retirement.
