DR. W. A. JONES
Dr. W. A. Jones died at his home in Cantril, Tuesday evening at 7:15 o’clock. He was 79 years, 11 months and 10 days of age.
Dr. Jones was born in Franklin, Johnson County, Indiana, on March 10, 1840. In 1841 his parents moved to Fairfield, Jefferson County, Iowa, and the doctor has been a resident of this state since.
Few men have attained a wider acquaintance in this section of Iowa. Dr. Jones served as mayor and postmaster at Cantril, held numerous other public offices; was active in democratic politics; was for more than 50 years a Mason, and for many years took an active hand in community and state affairs. When a young man he served as surgeon in the Tenth Iowa Regiment.
Dr. Jones read medicine in Fairfield and graduated from the University of Michigan. Prior to his graduation in medicine and surgery, he taught mathematics in the old Exline University, now Parsons College, but with a diploma in his possession started the practice of medicine in Winterset, a village now extinct. Shortly before starting on his medical career Dr. Jones married Miss Altha Miller, a daughter of Thomas Miller, another Jefferson County, pioneer. They came to Cantril in 1876.
To Dr. and Mrs. Jones have been born five children: Willis, who died at the age of two years; Myrtie, who died in 1917; I. T., who is manager of the presidential campaign of James W. Gerard; Carie, postmistress at Cantril; Neal, managing editor of the Omaha Daily News. I.T., Neal and Carie with Mrs. Jones, and Misses Mami? and Grace Jones, of Denver, were at the bedside of Dr. Jones at the time of his death.
