Delarma Douglas 1834 - 1915

Delarma Douglas son of Will and Jane Douglas was born in Darlington Pennsylvania, August 1, 1834 and passed away August 27, 1915 at his home near West Point, aged 81 years and 27 days.

He came to Iowa in 1844 at the age of nine years, with his parents, who settled near Ft. Madison residing there one year, when they moved to West Point, where he grew to manhood.

In 1855 he was united in marriage to Mary E. Barnes. To this union were born ten children five of whom precedes him to the great beyond. Soon after his marriage he moved to Van Buren county where he was a successful school master for a number of years.

In the fall of 1862 he responded to his countrys (sic) call, and enlisted in company G, fourth Iowa cavalry (sic), serving his country faithfully until the close of the war, three years later. Upon his return he moved to his farm in Scotland county Missouri again resuming his occupation teaching and farming.

Some years later he went to Nebraska where he served a number of years as county superintendent of schools.

In 1892 he returned to Lee county near West Point, and July 10 of the same year was united in marriage to Miss Lydia J. Pittman, who passed away January 16, 1902.

November 19, 1904, he was united in marriage to Mrs. Jennie Miller who, with their three children, remain (sic) to mourn their loss. He also leaves two sisters Mrs. N. J. Pittman of Cantril, Iowa, and Mrs. Lucuida Green of Hume, Missouri, and many other relatives and friends. Deceased was a man of many sterling qualities, always ready to lend a helping hand to those in sorrow or trouble. He will be greatly missed in the home and the community in which he has spent the greater part of his life.

Rest weary heart, thy pain and sorrow ended,

Rest tired hands, from weary toil set free.

Go spirit, the last roll call has sounded,

Rest now safe in eternity.

The funeral services were held at the home Monday after … officiated. The remains were interred in the city cemetery at West Point.
