Donna Smutz
Donna J. Smutz, 80, of Keosauqua died at 12:06 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14, 2007, at Van Buren County Hospital in Keosauqua.

Born April 9, 1927, in Cedar Rapids, she was the daughter of Neil and Vera Hartman Fogelsong. She married Harry Rich, who died on Luzon Island during World War II.

On Aug. 5, 1946, she married Waldo D. Smutz in Fairfield. He died April 27, 1986.

Mrs. Smutz and her husband operated W-D Dairy Creme in Keosauqua for 12 years and she worked at Circle B Enterprises, Archie's Market, Corner Cafe and Main Street Antiques, all in Keosauqua. While her husband was the Van Buren County sheriff, she was matron at the Van Buren County jail from 1948 to 1953.

Mrs. Smutz was known for her support of law enforcement officers and their families in Van Buren and Jefferson counties and she regularly delivered homemade cookies to both sheriff's offices. She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Farmington.

Survivors include five sons, Fred Rich of Tampa, Fla., Sam Smutz of Green Pond, S.C., Joe Smutz of Fairfield, Bill Smutz of Belmond and Gene Smutz of Cedar Rapids; one daughter, Cindy Quint of Plainfield, Ill.; 20 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; one brother, Bill Fogelsong of Keosauqua; and one sister, Madge Young of Cedar Rapids.

Besides her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents and one great-granddaughter.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Ped-rick Funeral Home in Keo-sauqua, where there will be a rosary service at 7 p.m., followed by family visitation.

The funeral for Mrs. Smutz will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Pedrick Funeral Home with the Rev. Apo Mpanda officiating. Burial will be in Fellows Cemetery, Keosauqua.

A memorial has been established for Van Buren County Emergency Medical Service.
