Mrs. Ray McLeland

Mrs. Hazel Roberts McLeland, 67, was born July 2, 1893 on a farm near Hays Center, Nebraska. She attended normal training school and began her teaching career at the age of 16 years. She taught three years. On Aug. 25, 1912 she was united in marriage to Ray McLeland of Milton. After farming two years near Hays Center they moved to Bird City, Kansas, where Mr. McLeland helped to operate a plowing and threshing outfit, which consisted of a crew of 18 men, with Mrs. McLeland getting the midnight supper for the men.

They later moved back to Nebraska where they lived on a farm for 23 years. They then moved to North Platte, Nebr., where they operated a milk route for three years. They then had a sale and bought a farm at Lexington, Nebr. From there they moved to Washington and Oregon. Mr. McLeland did trucking with her working in the factories. Then the next two years were spent in California and southern and western states, calling this their second honeymoon. They then came to Iowa to visit relatives and bought the Clayton Bell farm north of Milton in 1950 where they were living at the time of her death.

In June 1960 while Mrs. McLeland was gathering eggs in a large chicken house a violent wind storm struck this area. Three out of ten buildings were left standing. The chicken house that she was in was completely demolished. She received back and head injuries of which she never fully recovered. She was a patient at the Van Buren county hospital one week, from there she was taken to the Ottumwa hospital where she died March 25, of Uremic Poison. Her body was then brought to the Wellborn Funeral Home in Milton. On Monday, March 27 W. W. Wellborn and wife left with the body for McCook, Nebr. where services were held March 29 at the Breland Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Adrian Edgar, Methodist minister. Romona Anderson sang “The Old Rugged Cross” and “In the Garden”, accompanied by Doris Bauer on the organ.

Besides her husband she is survived by one brother, Arvene Roberts of Pueblo, Colo. and one sister, Irene Garrett of Long Mont, Colorado.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and one brother.
