William Waller Holland died at his late residence near Milton on last Thursday morning, May 15, 1884, aged 74 years, 11 months and 10 days. He was born in Sussex County Delaware June 5, 1809 and was married to Sarah Robbins who survives him, on March 5, 1835.
He came to Iowa with his family in the spring of 1842,walking nearly all the way. He at once saw that land here would be valuable and secured as much of it as he could honestly, and consequently became well to do, although he was not like a great many—every cent they could heard up without any thought of their fellow men or public charities; but was always ready to lend a “helping hand.”
He did not belong to any religious organization but was an exemplary citizen having never tasted whiskey as a beverage countenanced the use of profane language but was an upright man honored by his neighbors and respected by everyone who knew him.
He was a member of the Old Settlers Association of Van Buren County and was among the last of the first settlers of this section—Robert Russell, John Russell, Bushrod Craven, Mr. Hale and others having preceded him on their last journey from which no traveler returns.
The last Mr. Holland was always jovial and did much to brighten the paths of those whom he met, encouraging them and making life pleasanter than it would have been otherwise.
His funeral was preached from the Methodist Episcopal Church on Friday, by Rev. Robertson. Although it was a busy time, the church was well filled. I am not related and am posting this obituary for those who might find this person in their family history.
