JOHN Q. HARGROVE
John Q. son of William and Susan Hargrove, was born in Hancock County Indiana, on July 25, 1838, and died at his home in Milton Iowa, Friday June 1, 1917, at 5:00 a.m., aged 78 years, 10 months and 6 days. He came to Iowa with his parents in 1854 settling near Milton in Van Buren County. He was united in marriage to Hannah Holland, August 25, 1859. To this union was born three children, two of whom survive. He united with the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1856, over 61 years ago and has served in an official way since that time. He was a true friend to the church, a liberal contributor and an earnest worker. He was a member of the official board up to the time of his departure to the church triumphant.
Mr. and Mrs. Hargrove began housekeeping on a farm near Milton and remained there until eight years ago when they moved to Milton. About four years ago, Uncle John lost his eyesight and has been entirely blind. He bore the affliction heroically and retained his cheerful disposition until the end came. He often remarked that he would soon be at rest where he would see his Savior face to face. His first presidential vote was for Abraham Lincoln, and he never missed a presidential election.
Deceased leaves to mourn their loss, his companion, two sons, H.C. of Des Moines and E.E. of Milton, six grandchildren and one great grandchild. The funeral was held at the M.E. Church on Sunday morning at 11:00 and the church was crowded with friends to pay their last tribute to an old time friend. Rev. B.G. Hankins preached the sermon taking his text from Job 22:16. Rev. J.W. Holland also spoke a few words in memory of his departed uncle. Elder Holloway assisted in the service. The Masonic Order attended in a body and held the burial ritual at the cemetery. Mr. T.P. Bence of Bloomfield conducted the service with the assistance of the local lodge.
“Uncle John” has been a familiar figure in our community for so many years, he will be greatly missed not alone in the home, but by all. I am not related and am posting this obituary for those who might find this person in their family history.
