Sarah C. Holland was born in Milton Delaware, November 23, 1811 and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J.Q. Hargrove on December 13, 1898. age 87 years and 20 days. In 1835, she was married to William W. Holland and in 1842 came to Iowa. In those days, the railroad with all its conveniences of travel was unknown to the west and life meant very much of hardship and no little sacrifice. Yet in the midst of all the privations, there was a charm and heartiness about it, all too rarely found in these later days of prosperity and increasing facilities. Grandmother Holland was well adapted by nature for the scenes and activities of her busy life. Cheerful and of contented mind, she made the best of her simple surroundings and gave herself to labor and to song. Honest toil and frugality brought their reward; prosperity crowned their work and with the passing years, came increased goods and a promising family. From a child she was a devoted follower of the Lord Christ. As early as twelve years, she united with the Presbyterian Church and remained a member for 32 years. Then as three of her children had been converted and united with the M.E. Church, she brought her letter from Troy and joined them and for the past 43 years, she has been a faithful and devoted member of the same church. Three quarters of a century of fellowship and service in the church of Christ—what a marvelous record—and how rare! She was known by everybody and loved by all who knew her and when she fell asleep, the whole community mourns as each feels his personal bereavement. Surely she rests from her labors and her works do follow her. Four children and her husband preceded her to the better world. Three children remain, each of who is a grandparent. Funeral services were conducted from the M.E. Church by her pastor, Rev. J.W. Potter, who took his text “He giveth his beloved sleep”. The remains were laid to rest in the new Cemetery. I am not related and am posting this obituary for those who might find this person in their family history.
