MILTON WOMAN WAS LAST OF PIONEER BAND THAT CAME IN 1842
Funeral services were held Friday afternoon, July 13, 1934 at two o’clock at the M.E. church for Mrs. Hannah Hargrove, believed to be the last of a pioneer band which came from Delaware, to the Territory of Iowa in the year 1842.
The last rites were conducted by Rev. W.B. Ireland, and were attended by a large number of relatives and friends. The music was furnished by Mrs. G.W. Holdefer, and Mrs. F.E. Holland, who sang “How Firm a Foundation,” “Abide With Me” and “The End of the Road.” Mrs. W.D. Sherwood accompanied them at the piano. Pallbearers were Clay Baird, W.D. Russell, John Robinson, A.M. Brady, John Burchett and Joe Moore. Interment in charge of Burnetts was made in Sunnyside cemetery.
Born near Milton Delaware, January 12, 1842, Mrs. Hargrove came to this county with her parents when two months old. The journey was made with a group of 45 people who traveled by boat from Ohio to Keokuk. She is believed to be the last of this band of pioneers. She was married to J.Q. Hargrove in the year 1859. Her husband and two sons H. Clay and William L. preceded her in death. One son Edward E. with whom she had made her home for several years survives.
Among those from a distance who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. George Hargrove and son George Jr. of Des Moines, Mr. and Mrs. John Q. Hargrove and her parents Mr. and Mrs. Roland from Iowa City. I am not related and am posting this obituary for those who might find this person in their family history.
