Kathryn Hayes Norman, the youngest daughter of William W. and Cynthia Hayes, was born on a farm near Kellerton Iowa, in Ringgold County, on June 1, 1887. She came to Milton, with her parents when but a few months old and has spent her entire life inn this community. She graduated from the Milton High School in the class of 1905. She attended Normal Training School in Keosauqua and also Drake University. She spent several years teaching, having taught at Eureka and Elm Districts, as well as in the Moulton Iowa and Milton grades of the public school.
She was united in marriage to Albert R. Norman on December 24, 1911. Two children were born to this union, William Richard and an infant son, who has preceded her in death.
When a small child she united with the M.E. church and has been a faithful member until her death. She was a member of the O.E.S., and Pythian Sisters, as well as various church organizations.
During the early part of December, she was stricken with her fatal illness and gradually grew weaker until on February 24, 1932 at 1:30 p.m., she answered her Savior’s call to come to rest. Quietly and peacefully she fell asleep, to be with her dear Mother who had preceded her in death.
Funeral services were conducted, by Rev. H.F. Gilbert, at the Methodist church in Milton, Saturday afternoon, February 27, 1932. Special music was rendered, by Rev. and Mrs. J.C. Caughlan, who sang three duets and by Mrs. Charles F. Brady at the piano. Interment was made at the Milton Sunnyside cemetery.
The degree to which Mrs. Norman held the community’s esteem was reflected in the large number who attended the last rites for her. Business houses closed their doors and every seat in the commodious church was taken.
She is survived by her husband, and one son, William Richard; her aged father, William W. Hayes, two brothers, Harry and Bert of Ottumwa and one sister, Mrs. Fred Kyner of Humeston Iowa; one aunt, Mrs. Sarah Francey of Milton, as well as many other relatives and friends, to mourn her departure.
She was a kind and loving wife and mother, always interested in the higher and better things of life for her family and friends. She was a good neighbor, always spreading sunshine and cheer, wherever she went. The community has lost a wonderful woman. I am not related and am posting this obituary for those who might find this person in their family history.
