Mrs. Louisa Roby Burchett, wife of our well known citizen, Eli J. Burchett, died Sunday afternoon, April 9, 1922, at the family home, on West 7th St. Mrs. B. had been in poor health the past year, and for the past several weeks was confined to the house. She was born in Orange County Indiana, March 17, 1842, and her age was 22 days past 4 score.
Mrs. Burchett was a likeable woman and in her long earthly sojourn made many warm and lasting friends. It seemed a real pleasure for her and the aged husband to go about doing good.
As Louisa Roby she was married to E.J. Burchett, in November 1872. Two children were born to the union; one dying in infancy and Dr. Edwin Burchett, a prominent physician of Seymour, dying in 1918. The loss of this brilliant son was a great shock to the adoring mother, but patiently she bore up under the deep sorrow.
The funeral on Tuesday at 1 p.m. in the M.E. Church where the deceased had been a devout member, was largly attended; and the capacity of the building would have been taxed, but for the bad weather. Rev. W.A. Smith paid a noble tribute to Mrs. Burchett and her clean Christian life. The body rested in a heavy casket, buried in flowers and the face looked as tho a gentle dream had just passed by. The remains were placed in Oakland Cemetery--to await the resurrection in which Aunt Louisa had an abiding hope.
Relatives from abroad were George Roby, a brother of Troy, and Sarah Francy, a sister of Milton; Mrs. Dr. Burchett, daughter-in-law of Seymour; Alva Hunt and wife of Pulaski; D.L. Burchett and Burr Burchett and wife of Bloomfield; Carl Burchett a nephew of Kirksville; Fred Kiner and wife, a niece of Humeston; Catherine Norman, a niece of Milton; Mrs. Sallie Allen, a step-daughter of Kellerton; Will, Jacob, and Estle Roby, nephews of Milton; Burt Hays and wife of Ottumwa.
