Died at the residence of Milton McManis on last Wednesday afternoon, November 16th, 1881,
Uncle Asa Blanchard, aged 78 years and 1 month.
Mr. Blanchard was a native of Kentucky, having been born in that state October 1804. He
moved to Ohio and from there to Indiana. In 1840 he came to Iowa and located in this township
where he has been an honored and respected resident up until his death. Mr. Blanchard was
one of the early pioneers of Van Buren county and was the means of much of its development.
For several months previous to his death he had been failing and his death was a result of a
complication of diseases, brought on by old age. He went to bed after breakfast on November
16th, and before 3 p.m. he was a corpse. Mr. Blanchard was the oldest member of the
Masonic Lodge of this place and was buried by the fraternity. He was a member of no church,
but believed in the Universalist faith.
