Many Past Eighty years old Answers Summons at Daughter’s Home—Funeral Saturday
Once more the hand of death has entered the ranks of the older generation of Keokuk’s residents who have stood among the pioneers of southeastern Iowa, and this time Henry D. Wallis for nearly a quarter of a century a resident of Keokuk and, for seventy years a resident of Iowa has answered the summons. Death was caused by a complication of diseased induced by old age and came at 4 o’clock this morning at the home of Mr. Wallis’ daughter Mrs. H.C. Wiesmann, 1599 Exchange Street.
A native of eastern Virginia, Henry Wallis came to Iowa, with his parents and settled in the vicinity of the later town of Milton. His father, Dr. Logan Wallis, was one of the earliest practicing physicians in Van Buren County and probably in southeastern Iowa.
When Henry Wallis was still a youth of 19 he became a postmaster of Milton, and it was in that capacity that he met a young girl who rode to town on horseback for the mail. Courtship and marriage followed and Mr. and Mrs. Wallis made their home in Milton.
Later Mr. Wallis was elected sheriff of Van Buren County and removed with his family to Keosauqua, where he is remembered by many of the older inhabitants. For many years he was in business in Keosauqua subsequent to his official service.
It was about twenty-two years ago that Mr. and Mrs. Wallis came to Keokuk to make their home. They had lived for many years at 729 Carroll Street, and it was only four weeks ago that they left their own home to make their home with their daughter Mrs. Wiesmann.
The aged wife Mrs. Catherine Wallis survives together with five children: Mrs. Alice Trebilcock of Ford Kansas, Mrs. Laura Archer of Seattle Washington, John C. and Delbert Wallis of Burlington Iowa and Mrs. H.C. Wiesmann of this city.
The funeral will be held Saturday morning from the residence.
