OBITUARY
-------------
Martha J. Carter was born in Lexington, Ky., Nov. 14, 1824. When she was 12 years of age, her mother with the older children removed to Iowa settling on a farm near Farmington. On Sept. 4, 1846, she was united in marriage to Thomas Murphy and to this union were born 10 children, two of whom, John and Thomas Benton have preceded their mother to the land beyond. When the youngest child was about 5 years of age they moved to a home on Allen Lippincott's place west of Vernon. Here they resided until about 8 years ago they purchased a home in Vernon and moved to it. All of her life amid the trials and hardships incident to pioneer life and the rearing of a large family, Mrs. Murphy exemplified the life and teachings of the Christ. Four years ago she and her husband united with the Methodist Episcopal church of Vernon. She passed away at her home after a lingering sickness, Thursday morning Jan. 28, 1909, having reached the age of 84 years, 2 months and 14 days. The husband, one brother, Wash. Carter of Farmington, six sons, William H., Cornelius, Chas., Frederick R, Joseeph [sic] A. and Allen G., and two daughters, Mrs. Mary Strickling and Mrs. Alice McIntosh are left to mourn her departure. She leaves also thirty grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, and a host of friends who are today sorrowing because of her death. Much sympathy is expressed for her aged companion with whom for over sixty years she was permitted to journey hand in hand down life's rugged pathway. The funeral was at Vernon church Jan. 30, at 1 p.m. conducted by Rev. H. C. Druse.(Photocopy of this obit is located on page 93 of Obit Book A found in the Van Buren County, IA Genealogical Society's collection at the Keosauqua Public Library in March 2000.
