Charles John, son of Griffith and Caroline John, was born near Salem, December 23, 1851, and departed this life December 11, 1930, age 78 years, 11 months and 18 days.

He was married to Louisa M. Way, April 12, 1883. To this union two sons were born, Frank W., of Ottumwa, and Chauncey C. of Kansas City, Mo., both of whom, together with his wife survive him. He also leaves five grandchildren and one great grandchild; one brother, Sylvanus of Memphis, Mo., and two sisters, Mrs. Ella Moore, of Cantril and Mrs. Sena Jamison of Keosauqua, besides a host of other relatives and friends. Two brothers and two sisters have preceded him in death.

Mr. John was converted several years ago under the ministry of Rev. Minear at Home Prairie, but on moving to Milton his membership was transferred to the Milton M. E. church.

Mr. John was steward of the Van Buren County Home for five years, was very successful and was always industrious and known for his honesty and fairness in dealings.

Mr. John for 24 years resided on his farm four miles northeast of Cantril, but for the past 11 years has been a resident of Milton.

For the past year he has been in failing health, but fought determinedly, but at last had to yield, and has now taken the home prepared by his Saviour. He was a good husband, a loving father, a helpful friend and neighbor.

The funeral services were held at the M. E. church Sunday, Dec. 14 at 2 p. m. conducted by the pastor, J. W. Gruber. Interment in Sunnyside cemetery at Milton, Iowa.
