OBITUARY OF JOHN J. MALEY

John J. Maley was born October 10, 1840, at Ontario, Canada, and died at Mason City, Iowa, August 25, 1917, at the age of 76 years, 10 months and 15 days. He was the son of James and Alice Maley.

He learned the trade of a blacksmith in his native town and followed it there until 1868. He had been reading and hearing stories about the United States and decided to leave his native land and parental home and take up his residence in this country. After wandering for some time, he stopped at St. Francisville, Missouri. From there he went to Hamilton, Illinois, and about 1874 he came to Cantril where he has made his home ever since.

Six years ago he had an attack of paralysis which left his left leg and arm in a helpless condition. He could walk but he had no use of the arm. His friends persuaded he and his wife to go to the I. O. O. F. home at Mason City, Iowa, October 9, 1914.

John J. Maley was made an I. O. O. F. at St. Francisville, Missouri, and became a naturalized citizen then. On the 23rd day of August, 1865, he married Miss Caroline Crooks. They were the parents of four children, three dying in infancy. Mrs. Laura Cocayne, the surviving one lives in Cantril; also the three grandchildren.

He united with the M. E. church after he went to Mason City.

He conducted a blacksmith shop in Cantril up to the time of his sickness and was known as an expert workman. He had a retentive memory and never forgot names or faces.

John was a good neighbor and never was too busy or tired to help anyone afflicted or distressed. He put charity above all other considerations. A good man has gone to his rest. The wife and daughter have the sympathy of the entire community.

The funeral services were held at the Cantril Methodist church Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Lloyd Tennant of Ft. Madison. Interment was made at the Maple Grove Cemetery.
