DEATH OF A PIONEER
J.D.H. PRICE, FORMERLY A VAN BUREN COUNTY RESIDENT

The readers of the Democrat will be saddened to read of the death of James D. H. Price, who formerly owned a large farm northeast of Lebanon, and was one of the prominent and leading citizens in the western part of the county, having settled here in 1839. Thirty years ago there was practically no one living at Keosauqua or west of here who did not know and highly respect Mr. Price. In the years since he left Van Buren county he was missed as scarcely any other citizen would have been; and now he has passed to the other shore, to be known on this side of the dark river no more forever. Mr. Price was a deeply religious man, and we have no doubt he longed to be at rest and to meet his many waiting friends who has [sic] gone before. We find the following biography of Mr. Price in the Milton Herald:

The subject of this sketch--James Daniel Hunt Price,-- (better known as Uncle Jimmy) died May 11, 1906, at the home of his daughter Mrs. Ed Humphrey two and one half miles south east of Lebanon, aged 80 years and 11 months. He was born in Barren county, Kentucky, June 11, 1825. He came to Iowa and Van Buren county in the year 1889 [sic] and located near Mt. Zion. He was married to Jane Elizabeth Higden, December 16, 1846. To this union were born 10 children, four sons and six daughters of whom two sons preceded him in death. He united with the Baptist church in 1860, where he remained a faithful member until the end.

In 1878 Mr. Price moved with his family to Missouri where he ever afterwards made his home. The wife with the other eight children are left to mourn for a loving husband and father. Mr. Price bore with patience and fortitude the sufferings of his sickness and finally passed to the world beyond without a struggle. He left this world with the friendship of all his acquaintances. His body was taken to Green Castle, Missouri, where it was laid to rest in the Green Castle cemetery.
