MORTUARY RECORD
JOHN ELSE

Born May 30th, 1839, in England. Moved to Massachusetts when three years of age. Grew to mahood in Massachusetts and Pawtucket, R. I. Moved with his parents when a young man to Illinois. When 22 years of age joined Company G, 8th Missouri Infancy, May 20, 1861. First married Susan Wilkes in 1865, at Elmwood, Ill. She died in 1877. Five children were born to this union. In 1879, he was united in marriage to Miss Martha Horn of Leando, Iowa, who died in 1887. Four children were born to them, two of whom died in infancy. He was married to Miss Ada Carruthers in 1889. Eight children wre born to them, all of whom are living. One sister, Mrs. Sarah Pitt of Downs, Kansas, survives.

John Else came to Iowa in 1887. He had previously resided in Kansas 14 years. While in the army he was a portion of the time a prisoner in Andersonville prison. His funeral was the largest that had been held in that part of the county for a long time, and many of his old neighbors attended the burial at the Liming cemetery who could not attend the funeral.
