OBITUARIES
MRS. IRA CLAFLIN
Hannah Wells Richardson was born in Rochester, Vermont, June 7, 1814, and departed this life Mar. 16, 1907, aged 92 yrs., 9 mos., and 9 days. She was married in Rochester, Vt., to Ira Claflin April 7, 1833. Ten years after they moved to Lebanon, Van Buren county, Iowa, viz., July 5, 1843. To this union were born eight children, Wallace, Ellen and Mariah, being deceased. Those surviving are Mary R. Haynes of Oskaloosa, Iowa; Geo. A. Claflin of Lebanon, Iowa; Julia A. Evans, of Troy, Iowa; Emeline C. Cole, of San Francisco, Cal., and Charles L. Claflin, of Bakersville, Cal. She had 33 grandchildren, 43 great grand children and 7 great great grandchildren. Mrs. Claflin's health, physically and mentally, from youth to old age, was remarkable. Some weeks ago she went to Oskaloosa to visit her daughter and from there she was going to California to visit her two children who live there but while in Oskaloosa she suffered a slight stroke of paralysis. Thus her trip to California was abandoned. She was brought to Troy to her daughter, Mrs. Cam Evans, and there all was done that could be done to keep her longer on earth among children and friends. Death came at last but she was perfectly ready. She seemed to think the time so long for she was a great sufferer in her last days. She said to her daughter "I see the gates are opened, the way is clear." She often expressed a desire to go to her home in Lebanon, so when she died her remains wre taken back there and placed in the front room and in this, her own home residence, the funeral service was conducted by the Rev. J. W. McClure. After the funeral services, in the presence of a large concourse of sorrowing friends and loved ones, her remains were laid away in the cemetery at Lebanon, there to rest until the glorious resurrection morn.
