Services were held at Hastings Funeral Home in Perry at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 26 for David Henry Ripley, 76, who died at his home in Perry on Sunday, Oct. 22.
Officiating was the Rev. David Swinton of First United Methodist Church in Perry. Music was by Judy Henry. Hymns were "The Wind Beneath My Wings" and "Amazing Grace".
Honorary pallbearers were Jamie Burris, Erin Stevens and Kristen Burris.
Pallbearers were Jason Buchanan, Trevor Stevens, M.C. "Van" Vanderlinden, Dan Bram, Doug Bram and Brad Bram.
Military rites were conducted by American Legion Kinkead Martin Post 583 of Rippey.
Burial was in Violet Hill Cemetery in Perry.
Memorials may be left at the funeral home.
Son of Clair Ripley and Mable Milam Ripley, David was born in Leando, Iowa on June 13, 1924. He attended school in Selma, Iowa and graduated from Selma High School.
On March 4, 1943, David entered the United States Navy and served as a machinist's mate. he was honorably discharged on March 21, 1946. He returned to Selma and worked as an auto mechanic with his brother, George, in Ruthven for two years. In 1949, he received his refrigeration training in Des Moines.
David was united in marriage to Betty Bram on March 12, 1950, and the couple made their home in Perry. He worked for Roscoe Hall as a mechanic in the refrigerator and appliance field. Five years later, he opened his own refrigerator, air conditioning and appliance repair. After 17 years, David closed his business and went to work at the Oscar Mayer plant in Perry. He retired after 12 years when the plant closed.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Perry and the Perry American Legion Post.
Preceding in death were his parents; one sister, Ida; and four brothers, Skip, George, Bob and Jim.
Survivors include his wife, Betty; three daughters, Rhonda Buchanan of Panora, Sandy Burris and Cindy Stevens, both of Perry; six grandchildren; two brothers, Clair "Junior" of Arizona and Don of Ottumwa; five sisters, Beulah Kerst(Keast) of Canada, Rose Wright, Anna McClure and Betty Gatlin, all of Ottumwa, and Darlene Bradfield of Nebraska.
