FORMER VAN BUREN COUNTY TEACHER FARMER AND LAWYER IS DEAD, AGED 66 YEARS

The Democrat has received from Mr. F. B. Fosnot of Wichita, Kansas, a copy of the Eagle of that city, of Monday, July 22, which contains an announcement of the death of Mr. John J. Fegtly, a former resident of Van Buren county. The deceased lived for many years near Utica, on a farm, and was also a successful school teacher. Later he studied law in Keosauqua in the office of Lea & Beeman, and went from this county to Wichita in 1881-Of his death the Eagle says:

"John J. Fegtly, 66 years old, pioneer and one of Wichita's most active Masons, died last night at the home of Mrs. Christine Whitlock, his mother-in-law, 1516 East Douglas avenue, following a stroke of apoplexy.

"Mr. Fegtly spent the last few hours of active service preparing funeral arrangements of C.M. Garrison for lodge members of the A.F. and A.M. He returned to Mrs. Whitlock's residence about 11:30 o'clock Saturday night and complained to his wife that he felt very tired. During the night Mrs. Fegtly noticed her husband was not well and immediately sent for Dr. Arthur Fegtly, her son at Douglass, Kan. When Dr. Fegtly arrived he found his father was suffering from a stroke of apoplexy. It was not until late Sunday night that he passed away.

"Mr. Fegtly was born in Wooster,O., in 1851. He came to Wichita in 1881, and built the first building in this city after the boom broke. This is the brick building at 211 South Main street, where Mr. and Mrs. Fegtly have made their home for many years. From 1892 until 1902 the Fegtlys lived in Kingfisher, Oklahoma.

"Besides his widow, Mr. Fegtly is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Charles Jones, 402 South Topeka avenue, and a son, Dr. Arthur Fegtly of Douglass, Kan.
