OBITUARY

Lewis Owens was born in Germany, March 28, 1835, and passed from this life at Cantril, Iowa, March 23, 1919, aged 83 years, 11 months and 25 days. He came to this country landing at New York in November, 1856. He was married to Sophia Tegler, Dec. 5, at Ft. Plains, New York. From there they went west arriving in Keosauqua, Dec. 31st, 1856. From Keosauqua they moved to a farm near Cantril, where they lived until the fall of 1889, which was their home until called by death.

To this union were born three children, Mary J, now Mary J. Magorin of Cantril, born May 21, 1860, Adele born August 16th, 1862, who died Nov. 1st, 187[0], Frank born Jan. 25th, 1865, who died Jan. 29th, 1889.

Father Owens was one of a large class of Germans who grew tired of the tyrany [sic] of Germany and sought freedom in this country and no one could have been more loyal to our country through its struggle with Germany than he was. He was a kind hearted man. A member of the M.E. church and loved by all who knew him.

The funeral was form [sic] the M.E. church in Cantril, burial in the cemetary near by.
