J. Henry Ward died at the hospital in Carbondale at 6 a.m. today from injuries received when struck by a switch engine on the Illinois Central railroad crossing at Main street in this city Monday night, March 20th. Gangrene infected the wound in the left leg on Tuesday of this week. Lockjaw set in yesterday and death was directly due to this. His wife and other members of the family were with him when he died. The body will be brot [sic] home late today for burial. The funeral arrangements have not been completed and will be announced later.

Julius Henry Ward, oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Ward, was born in Connecticut, in October 1846. While Mr. Ward was still a mere lad the family moved to Illinois and settled on a farm in Jackson county, near Carbondale. He was educated in the schools of Jackson county. Shortly after he became of age Mr. Ward came to Du Quoin and, with his brother, Dwight Ward, entered the livery business.

Mr. Ward was married to Miss Cephisa E. Slawson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Slawson. The wedding was solemnized on the farm home of the bride's parents. Mr. Ward built the residence at 222 South Mulberry street where he lived for the remainder of his life. To them was born one child, Hiley, who preceded his father in death. Mr. Ward's parents came to this community a number of years after he had left them and lived on a farm near here until they died.

Mr. Ward is survived by his wife, daughter-in-law, Mrs. Mamy Ward, widow of his son, two grandson, Hiley and Merril Ward, one brother, George F. M. Ward of Mt. Vernon, and a number of other relatives. Two brothers, W. Dwight and Samuel Ward, have been dead several years. Mr. Ward would have been seventy years old if he had lived until next fall.
-----
Later--The funeral of Mr. Ward will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, probably at the home on South Mulberry. Interment will be in the I. O. O. F. cemetery. The bereaved relatives returned home this afternoon at 1:37. The remains will be brot [sic] at 6 this afternoon.
