MRS. CEPHISE WARD CALLED TO HER REWARD
---------
GREATLY BELOVED ELDERLY LADY HAD BEEN ILL FOR SEVERAL WEEKS
---------
Following a lingering illness of several weeks, during which life just gradually faded out, Mrs. J. [two lines have another item pasted over it] shortly before the dawn heralded the day of Thursday, November 7, 1929, at her home on South Mulberry.

Cephis Slawson, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Slawson, was born in New Orleans July 9, 1856, and in early childhood accompanied them when they moved to Du Quoin and located on what came to be known as the Slawson farm, at Slawson school, west of this city.

But one child, Hiley H. Ward, was born in this home, and he died July 7, 1904, leaving his wife, Mrs. Mamie Ward, and two small sons, Hiley, Jr., and Merrill, all three of whom thenceforth made their home with the elder Wards, the boys, however, leaving at marriage to make their own homes. Hiley H. Ward was county clerk of Perry county at the time of his death. Besides these two grandsons, Mrs. Ward leaves five great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Ward leaves two brothers and one sister surviving her. They are Dewitt Slawson of Sacramento, Calif., Horton Slawson of this city and Mrs. F. M. (Vie) Harriss of Memphis, Tenn. Mrs. Harriss had been constantly at her bedside for a number of days. One sister, Mrs. Belle McCreery, died in East St. Louis only a year ago. Two other sisters, Mrs. Amanda Croessman, first wife of George Croessman, and Miss Lulu Slawson died a number of years ago.
