Samuel Marks Fegtly, a short-time resident of Van Buren, died 19 May 1867.
He was born in Wooster, Wayne County, Ohio, on 17 Mar 1841, the seventh of eight children. His oldest brother, John Wesley Fegtly (19 yrs older), had settled in Utica in 1854.
Samuel enlisted in Co I, 102nd Inf. Rgt. Ohio in 1862 as a corporal, and was mustered out as a full sergeant with Distinguished Service in June 1865 in Nashville. Although his brother in Utica had already died, Samuel came to Van Buren after the war where he had nephews and nieces. He willed a $100 Deed of Scholarship to his sister-in-law, Martha Kuhn Fegtly, for her children to attend Iowa Wesleyan University.
He is buried in Bentonsport Cemetery, a small stone with a metal GAR stake.
