Elizabeth Smith, wife of James Smith, died March 31, 1880.

She was born October 9, 1809, in Augusta county, Va., near Stanton [sic]. She was the daughter of Rev. Solomon Garber. Was married to her now bereaved husband Sept. 18, 1827. They have lived in Iowa, Van Buren county, since 1853. They raised a large family the most of them have left the parental roof; some in Iowa, and some in Missouri. One son W. H. H. Smith is a member of the Iowa conference. Mother Smith was remarkable for her simplicity of manners, possessed of a quiet, peacemaking and forgiving spirit. When one word was spoken in her presence likely to produce the least friction she was always ready to pour oil on the troubled waters. For 25 years , during which time she was a member of the M.E. church, her life was one of steady devotion to all the interest, of the church, and the cause of the Master. Her house was the home of the weary itinerant. Her end was peaceful, calm and victorious. "Mark the perfect Christian and behold the upright, for the end of that soul is peace." - J. CRAIG
