John Dodds was born in Christian County, Kentucky September 24, 1808, and died at his home in Harrisburg Township, Van Buren County, Iowa May 19, 1898, aged 89 years, 5 months and 25 days. When a child he moved with his parents to Ohio, thence to Illinois and settled later in Jefferson County, Illinois, where he married Miss Susan Wallace in 1832. They came to Lee County, Iowa in 1851 and three years later moved to his late place of residence. To them were born six sons and four daughters, all of whom save one son, Joseph, survive the parents. The wife and mother died August 31, 1872. The surviving children are Mrs. Norm Sayer, of La Belle, Mo.; Mrs. Eliza A. Tade of Sacramento, Cal., Mrs. Ellen Proper, of Denver, Col.; Mrs. Alice Washabough, of Bradford, Penn.; Wm. H. Dodds, of Ottawa, Kan.; David J. Dodds, of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; Jas A. Dodds, of Kansas City, Kan. and John F. and Chas. T. Dodds, of Harrisburg township.
Mr Dodds united with the Harrisburg Baptist church in 1865, and until the time of their deaths both he and his wife were faithful members. Deceased was for 50 years a member of the Masonic fraternity.
The funeral services occured [sic] at the Harrisburg church, conducted by Rev. McCollom. The burial service was conducted by his brother Masons at the Bonaparte cemetery.
The pall-bearers were Henry Humphreys, Henry Beard, Phil Eich, C. S. Percival, Wesley Bennett and Bert Smith, all brother Masons of the deceased.
