Matilda J. Cavin was born in Tennessee, June 29, 1833, and died near Pierceville, Iowa, March 13, 1898, aged 65 years, 9 months and 16 days. She came with her parents to Illinois and after a short while they came to Van Buren county, Iowa, where she resided until her death. She was married to James Miller, November 23, 1848. To them four children were born, three of whom are living. Her husband died and she was again married to Moses Smith, Jan. 9, 1862. To this union three children were born, a son and daughter and the husband surviving her.

The funeral services occurred at her late residence Tuesday, March 15, 1898, conducted by Rev. A. E. Thornley, and the remains were deposited in the Dibble cemetery.
