Family in two vehicles that crashed; 2 die, 2 hurt

DOUDS, IA. - Kathryn Campbell, her son and a foster child were riding back to Douds from the New Life Academy Thursday afternoon. Another son, Brian, 17, was riding in a friend's truck, heading in the opposite direction.

At the top of a hill on a gravel road southwest of Douds, the vehicles collided.

The family's toll: Brandon Campbell and Austin Boyd, the foster child, both 5, were killed. Kathryn Campbell, 27, and Brian Campbell were injured.

Brandon, Austin and Kathryn Campbell were passengers in a car driven by Shelly May, 22, of Douds. Brian Campbell was riding in a truck driven by Phillip Davis, 17, also of Douds.

Kathryn Campbell was released from University Hospitals in Iowa City, but May remained in critical condition there Friday. Davis and Brian Campbell had minor injuries.

Davis and Brian Campbell had just picked up a load of firewood when the crash occurred.

Kathryn Campbell and her husband, the Rev. Phil Campbell, operate New Life Academy, a private Christian school.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday at the Bethel Worship southwest of Douds.
