1990 SE 20Fairfield man arrested for hit-and-run accident
Bobby Oris Hanen, 26, Route 2, is held in Jefferson County Jail on three traffic charges in connection with a hit-and-run accident which killed Barbara Harryman, 34, of Fairfield in August.
Harryman's body was found in the street on West Grimes Avenue at about 2:30 a.m. Aug. 11 after a driver passed over what he believed was a bag of garbage in the roadway.
Authorities determined that the woman had been struck down by a vehicle before the second vehicle came upon the accident scene in the 1800 block of West Grimes. Investigation was centered on the identification of the first driver.
Hanen was arrested Wednesday evening in Fairfield on charges of failure to stop at the scene of an accident involving a person injury or death, an aggravated misdemeanor, failure to give aid, and failure to report an accident, both serious misdemeanors.
Hanen pleaded not guilty to charges at his arraignment in Jefferson County Magistrate Court at 9 a.m. today. He is held in jail in lieu of $7,000 bond. Preliminary hearing is set for Oct. 1 at 9 a.m.
Ongoing investigation by the Fairfield Police Department and the Iowa State Patrol showed that evidence found at the scene of the accident matched from Hanen's vehicle. Hanen's repainted Toyota pickup was examined in the laboratories of the Division of Criminal Investigation in Des Moines.
An autopsy report from state medical examiner Thomas Bennett indicated Harryman died of massive injuries. However, the examiner was unable to confirm which of the two vehicles that struck the woman actually caused her death.
Study of damage to both vehicles involved indicated Harryman's body already was prone in the street when the second vehicle, driven by Timothy Reighard, Route 2, passed over it. The nature of the undercarriage damage helped absolve Reighard in the fatality.
Police followed numerous leads in the case in their search for the key vehicle involved, Detective Capt. Donald Raymond said today. Many leads were offered by the public, and all of them were followed up, he said.
Charges were prepared by Jefferson County Attorney Michael Brown Wednesday afternoon, citing three separate, applicable sections of the Iowa Code. Charges were filed by the state patrol.
Hanen was arrested at work on a construction job within the city at about 5 a.m.
