Hit-and-run driver sought in fatality

Fairfield police are seeking public assistance in identifying a hit-and-run driver in connection with a traffic fatality in the city last Friday night.

Police have established that Timothy Reighard, 22, of Route 1, was not responsible for the death of Barbara Harryman, who was struck down by a vehicle as she walked on West Grimes Avenue to her home in the Ranch Trailer Court.

A woman walking with Harryman, Deborah Schuchman, of Route 1, was released Tuesday from University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics where she was treated for injuries sustained in the accident. She was unable to provide authorities with significant information, according to Police Chief Randy Cooksey. He said Schuchman knows nothing about what happened until after she regained consciousness in the Iowa City hospital.

Cooksey said witnesses have confirmed a pickup truck being driven in an erratic manner in the area sometime before the accident was reported to police by telephone at 11:21 p.m. Reighard was waiting at the accident scene when police arrived, the chief said.

Evidence supports Reighard's account of approaching what he thought was a bag of garbage in the roadway. By the time he recognized a human form, he was unable to stop his car in time to avoid running over the body, Cooksey said.

Investigation has confirmed that Reighard's vehicle, a 1976 Dodge Charger, had no bumper damage and only undercarriage damage, which would indicate Harryman already was prone when the car passed over, the chief noted.

Schuchman apparently had been thrown onto the grass along the street by the original impact, he said.

Debris found at the scene indicates the fatality involved a 1972 to 1978 model Toyota pickup which originally was yellow, but has been painted flat black. The right front headlight area would be damaged.

Authorities ask that anyone knowing of such a vehicle or having information leading to the identification of the driver to contact the Jefferson County Law Center

The Register's Iowa News Source

FAIRFIELD, IA. - A Fairfield man suspected in the death of a woman who was struck by a vehicle has been cleared and police now are seeking a pickup truck believed to have hit the woman.

Police said Timothy Reighard, 22, was not responsible for the death of Barbara Harryman, 34, who was hit by a vehicle as she walked a street near her home in Fairfield Aug. 10.

Police Chief Randy Cooksey said evidence supports Reighard's story that he saw what he thought was a bag of garbage in the road and was unable to stop in time when he realized it was a body.

Debris found at the scene indicates the accident involved a Toyota pick-up from the years 1972-78 that originally was yellow but has since been painted black.
