Auto Collision Is Fatal To Burlington Child

MT. STERLING - A 20-month-old Burlington girl was killed Saturday afternoon in a head-on collision about one mile northeast of here.

Six other persons were critically injured.

Dead is Tracy Shannon, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Ed Shannon, 1130 Ash.

Injured and hospitalized at a Keosauqua hospital are:

Joe Ed Shannon, 24, and his wife Zeta, 24, both of Burlington, and Jerry Payne, 22, Bonaparte. All four were passengers in a car driven by Payne.

Orlie Nixon, 69, Lonnie Nixon, 39, and Rachel Nixon, 23, all of Mt. Sterling, were passengers in a car driven by the Nixon woman. Orlie Nixon is the father of Lonnie and Rachel.

The Shannon baby was dead on arrival at University hospital in Iowa City, it was reported by Van Buren County Sheriff Orville Lee.

Lee said Mrs. Shannon and Orlie Nixon were still unconscious late Saturday night.

On Hill Crest

Lee reported the two cars met head-on at the crest of a hill and both cars were driven into ditches. Neither car turned over but both were total wrecks.

The Payne car was headed south and the Nixon auto north when the accident occurred.
