Ann Elizabeth Walter, daughter of Henry and Pheobe Wood Walter of Preston County, West Virginia, was born December 27, 1816 in Evansville, Preston County, West Virginia, and died Aft. 1860. She married Benjamin Shaw.

Ann Elizabeth Walter and her husband Benjamin Shaw initially lived near Evansville, West Virginia. They went west, settling on a farm adjacent to her brother Rawley Walter in Vernon, Iowa. The Shaw family moved to Iowa about the time the other two girls and two brothers went west, after the burial of their first son in 1852.

Children of Ann Walter and Benjamin Shaw are:
i. John W. Shaw, born February 3, 1833, Evansville, (West) Virginia; died January 9, 1852, Mt. Morris, Preston County, (West) Virginia.
John W. Shaw was buried near his grandfather Simon Walter's grave at Mt. Morris Methodist Church Cemetery.
ii. Rawley Shaw, born August 7, 1835, Evansville, (West) Virginia; died August 20, 1867, Keokuk, Iowa.
Rawley Walter was a Civil War soldier who died in the Federal hospital at Keokuk, Iowa..
iii. Mary Ann Shaw, born February 20, 1837; m. FNU Scantlin. They had three sons and three daughters.
iv. William O. Shaw, born September 16, 1838, Preston County, (West) Virginia; died June 27, 1910, Canton, McPherson County, Kansas.
v. Phoebe Shaw, born February 3, 1841; died September 11, 1868; m. Elbert Spencer, Abt. 1868.
vi. Eli Shaw, born September 12, 1843; died McPherson County, Kansas ; married Tamar Goodown.
Eli Shaw was the third Civil War soldier in Ann Elizabeth Walter’s family. He moved to McPherson County, Kansas, where he took up a soldier's homestead.
vii. Sarah Shaw, born October 16, 1846; died Van Buren County, Iowa.
viii. Charles W. Shaw, born August 6, 1848 ; died August 7, 1848.
