A little more information may help to solve your question. Where did John die in 1936? Can you transcribe the names from his obituary and any places they lived. What census and where did you locate John and James in Iowa? If John were born in 1850 it is unlikely he had a child in the 1860's. Besides, birth certificates for the 1860's in Iowa do not exist. A transcription of John's obituary would really help along with any specific places you found them living in. Then perhaps someone can help you.
