This is what I found for you --

John Mason Ruth was born 20 September 1857 in Rose Hill, Gentry, Missouri; He died 12 September 1941 in Blackwell, Kay, Oklahoma. He was the son of William Ruth and Mary Frances Teasley. William Ruth was born 29 April 1831 in Ohio and died 11 April 1923 in Portland, Oregon. He and Mary Frances Teasley separated/divorced? and he remarried to Sarah (Embree) Holmes on 7 November 1866 in Tipton, Cedar County, Iowa.

John Mason Ruth married Nancy Jane Francis on 15 June 1885 in Rich Hill, Missouri. On the marriage license she was listed as Mrs. A. J. Edmonston. She was born 17 December 1859 in Vermillion County, Illinois; She died 29 February 1952 in Blackwell, Kay, Oklahoma. She was the daughter of Salatiel Carter Francis and Catherine Fairchild. The family is enumerated in 1860 in Pilot, Vermillion, Illinois; in 1870 in Osage, Bates, Missouri and in 1900 in Ernest, Dade, Missouri.

In the 1900 Census, Monroe Edmonson is enumerated with John and Nancy Ruth as John's stepson born December 1879 in Missouri. In the 1930 census, Monroe is enumerated as the nephew of Charles W. Francis in Swan Lake, Caddo, Oklahoma. Nancy Francis appears to have been married to a Mr. Edmonston/Edmonson in the late 1870's and had a son, Monroe.

Obtaining the Oklahoma Death Certificates should provide the proof of parentage. Also it appears that John Mason Ruth's father, William may have enlisted from Muscatine, Iowa in the Civil War. You could pursue this also.
