Early settlers, Riggs family

Family stories have one family going to Iowa from Meigs county Ohio between 1840-1850. The story is
the parents die...don't know how or where or when. They may have died from illness, Indians, ?. The children are retreived and brought back to Ohio and appear in the 1850 Ohio census with family and neighbors. I need some ideas on where to start...I don't have any county name to start with. I may need to go county by county and look at cemetery records or obits. Would appreciate any suggestions.
