How good are mortality schedules

Folks,

I have an interest in historic accounts of rattlesnakes in Iowa. Recently I have been putting together the rattlesnake fatalities in Iowa.
I was surprised to find I had 18 deaths. See:

Then Atkinson did an ancestry.com mortality scedules search and came up with 10 more. see:
http://homepages.dordt.edu/~mahaffy/rattle/deaths/mortality%20schedules%20rattlesnake%20deaths%20Iowa.pdf

I would like to know how good mortality schedules are. Except for Andrew Jones, whose tombstone I found, I could not confirm these deaths from accounts or cemetery records on line. That is not really surprising since the dates are often before 1880 when counties had to keep vital records.

Can anyone tell me how good these mortality schedules usually are or a good way to confirm the deaths.

Thanks for your feedback.
