Do any of the children's birth records give any middle name or additional details on the father's name, age or birthplace? Have you checked in the Appanoose county Clerk's office to see if a divorce was ever filed? You might want to check if the story told in the family matches what is on file with the court.

Also, a jeweler might have been an attractive target for theives.

You might also find county records in the town and land records in the recorder's office, and any court case records in the Clerk's office if he ever had to sue someone, or was ever sued.

Interesting to note that he wasn't living with Clara and son Earl on the 1895 Iowa State Census.
