Joel Van Hal, 46, of Creston, formerly of Pella, died Monday, Nov. 30, 2015 at his home in Creston. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 4, 2014 at the Faith Christian Reformed Church in Pella. Burial will be at Portergrove Cemetery in Pella. Pella visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 3 at the Garden Chapel Funeral Home in Pella. Creston visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 2 at the Powers Funeral Home in Creston, with local family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday. No local viewing will be held. Memorials may be given to Hope Ministries. Online condolences may be given at www.powersfh.com.
Joel Lynn Van Hal was born January 2, 1969, to Jerry and Darlene (Bensink) Van Hal in Newton, Iowa. He was a 1987 graduate of Pella Christian High School and then attended Dordt College and the University of Iowa.
Joel married Stacy Lynn Carney on June 11, 2011, at the Abundant Life Family Church in Creston, Iowa. He was a surveyor for Garden & Associates Engineering for 14 years. Joel loved helping people especially as an Alcoholics Anonymous sponsor, and he enjoyed attending spiritual retreats for AA. Joel loved music, whether it was singing hymns with his family, or attending Christian concerts with his wife. He liked camping, fishing and hunting for Big Foot with his family. Joel also enjoyed spending time at home with his family and reading together. Joel was a faithful member and elder for Abundant Life Church in Creston.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife Stacy; step-son Mason Wagaman; mother Darlene Van Hal; siblings: Darla (Russell) Dykstra of Kansas City, Missouri, and their children Dustin, Dakota and Dylan; Denise (J. Scott) Kimm of Churchill, Montana, and their children Jonathan (Sammie), Aaron and Rose; Todd (Diana) Van Hal of Eldridge, Iowa, and their children Leah and Drew; parents-in-law Ellie and Richard Carney; sister-in-law Terry Wallace and her children Erin and Richard Wallace; and great nephews Nate and Ryder Wallace.
