Paul Karl Groth was born August 25, 1942 in Des Moines; the son Karl and Rose (Priebe) Groth. After graduation from Lincoln High School in 1960, he met his wife Loraina Mae Layton who was attending beauty school in Des Moines. They were married October 23, 1966, at the Church of Christ in Missouri Valley.
After their marriage, Paul and Loraina settled in rural Warren County on Paul’s family farm where they began farming. Paul’s father died in 1968, which left the farming solely up to him. At the same time they began their family with Lisa born in 1967, Scott in 1970 and Teena in 1974. They raised their three children with love and care; took them to Sunday school and church every Sunday making certain they always had perfect attendance. Singing at church was always a highlight since they all loved to sing the hymns.
Paul would most wish to be remembered as a farmer but he also spent many years working other jobs which included Caterpillar, Gibbs-Cook and Schildberg Construction where he retired from after 25 years.
Paul was a devoted member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Winterset and he was a member of the Harrison County American Legion; having served in the Iowa Army National Guard. Being a farmer he enjoyed collecting toy tractors. All this said, he was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who loved his family and cherished any time spent with them.
He is survived by two daughters, Lisa (Doug) Pitt of Missouri Valley; Teena Groth of Orient; a son, Scott (Lynn) Groth of Cedar Rapids; a sister, Mary (Larry) Conrath of Des Moines; 5 grandchildren, Bryant Coberly (Annie Mackey), Tasha Coberly, Barret Pitt, Brenden and Caden Groth; several nieces, nephews, extended family and a host of friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Loraina who died October 20, 2008, parents, and a sister, Jeanne Rogers.
