Mrs. Arthur (Irene M.) Wohllaib, 65, of Afton, died suddenly at her home August 13, 1973 at 4:45 p.m. Thursday after suffering an apparent heart attack. Mrs. Wohllaib had lived in the Afton community nearly all of her life and had ben assistant postmaster at the Afton post office for 25 years before retiring a few years ago.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Stroud funeral home at Afton. Rev. Norman E. Hoag, pastor of the First Baptist church at Creston, and Rev. Earl Earl Thornton, pastor of the Afton Assembly of God church, will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn cemetery at Afton.
Her family said a memorial fund is being established for Greenlawn Cemetery and contributions may be left at the funeral home.
Irene Mateer was born at Afton, Sept. 23, 1907. She was the daughter of Walter and Bertha Grossman Mateer.
She was married at Afton, April 17, 1929, to Arthur Wohllaib, who preceded her in death Feb. 28, 1973. Mr. Wohllaib was in the gasoline and oil business in Afton for many years and was a former mayor of Afton and former justice of the peace.
Mrs. Wohllaib was a member of Ivy Rebekah lodge and the Royal Neighbors of America, the Antique Auto Club of America and a member of the former Evangelical United Brethren Church at Afton.
She and her husband were both interested in antique automobiles and their old Model T Ford was well known in this vicinity where they had participated in many parades and activities.
Mrs. Wohllaib is survived by a brother, Robert W. Norton of Sioux City: a sister, Mrs. William (Ada) Cole of Afton; a niece and a nephew. Her parents and a sister, Bessie, preceded her in death.
