Gale Fred Hoffman 1920-2008

Gale Hoffman, 88, of rural Shannon City, died May 15, 2008, at his home.

Services will 2 p.m. Saturday, May 17, at Shannon City Community Church. The Rev. Lila Green will officiate. Burial will be in Harmony Cemetery in rural Shannon City. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. Friday with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Powers Funeral Home, junction of Highways 34 and 25. Memorials are to be established.

Gale Fred Hoffman, son of Hazel Elizabeth (Davenport) and Donald Frank Hoffman, was born May 11, 1920, in Shannon City. He graduated from Shannon City High School.

On March 18, 1942, he married Eleanor Ruth Vanderflute in Maryville, Mo. They lived and farmed in the Shannon City area all of their lives. Gale also operated Hoffman Service, a full-service filling station and auto repair, with his brother. He was a member of Afton Co-op board, ASCS committee, Shannon City Community Church, Order of Odd Fellows of Shannon City, Lakeshore Golf and Country Club and Tucson Estates Golf Club.

Gale farmed his whole life and never retired. He enjoyed golfing in Iowa with his sons, grandson and friends. When it was cold, he headed south to golf with his buddies in Arizona.

Survivors include his wife Eleanor Hoffman of Shannon City; sons, Mark (wife Charlene) Hoffman of Shannon City, Randy (wife Dianne) Hoffman of Nora Springs and Jim Hoffman of Shannon City; brother James Hoffman of Shannon City; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Gale was preceded in death by his parents; sister Donna Hiatt; sister-in-law Maxine Hoffman; brother in-law Harold Hiatt and niece Jackie Hiatt.
