Harold B. Hiatt was born to Marica (Yadriyevich) and Robert Raymond Hiatt on June 4, 1924, on a destroyer at sea following World War I. Harold entered eternal rest on January 30, 2006, at Clearview home in Mount Ayr, Iowa, at the age of eighty-one years, seven months and twenty-eight days.
As a child, Harold lived in many places and moved with his career Navy family. He graduated from Creston High School with the class of 1942.
Harold served in the United States Army from December… 7, 1942 until November 8, 1945 during World War II. Sgt Harold B. Hiatt served in General George Patton's Third Army, Co B 5th Medical Battalion and the 5th Infantry Division. He joined the Fifth Division shortly after D-Day in France. From there he went with Patton's Third Army in Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe. He received the Victory Medal, American Theater Ribbon and the EAME Theater Ribbon with three bronze stars, LaCroix De Guerre, and Avec Paime (Belgium). Harold's military service inspired two of his grandsons to join the armed services.
On October 29, 1945, he married Domna Rose Hoffman in Shannon City, Iowa.
Harold began farming in the Shannon City area in 1946. Harold also lived in Detroit, Michigan, and worked in a steel mill, but he spent most of his life farming. He retired in 1989.
Harold served on the East Union School Board from 1964 - 1972, serving as president for several years. He was instrumental in the reorganizing and building of the new school in 1971. He served on the Board of Directors of SICOG from 1977 - 1985 and was chairman of the Board in 1979. He was involved in the developing of the Rural Water System, including the lakes that supply water to the rural water system. He was a member of the American Legion; active in the Democratic Party; Member of the Cattleman's Association; and he had life-time memberships in the Society of the 5th Division and The Battle of the Bulge.
Left to mourn Harold's passing are his daughters: Becky (DeWayne) Ricklefs, Ida Grove, IA; Kay Hiatt, Des Moines; Kim Hiatt, Diagonal; three grandchildren: Collin Ricklefs, Watertown, WI; Bryce Ricklefs, stationed at Andrews Air Force Base, Maryland; Dustin Ricklefs, Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland; Brothers: Allen Hiatt, Arizona; Jerry (Diane) Hiatt, Helenwood, TN; Sister-In-Law: Cherron Hiatt, Sioux Falls, SD; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Preceding Harold in death were his parents; his wife Domna in 2000; his daughter: Jacque Hiatt in 1976, and his brother: Ray Hiatt.
