Arthur F. Burkhalter, son of William and Louise Huewuikel Burkhalter was born April 21, 1908 in Pottawattamie County, Iowa; and passed away December 11, 1988 at Creston Manor, Creston, Iowa, at the age of 80 years, seven months, 20 days.
He completed his education in the rural schools of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and moved to Corning with his parents and family in March, 1923. While living in the Mercer Center area of Adams County, he met and married Merle Irene Bunting on June 1, 1938. This union was blessed with six children, four sons and two daughters.
After the first five years of farming near Stringtown, they moved to the Cromwell area where he farmed until 1962. The next 21 years he worked for Creston Roofing and Siding of Creston as a bookkeeper. They moved to Creston in 1964 where they resided at the time of his death.
Through the years he was active as a 4-H leader in Adams County, and various community projects. Upon retiring he was able to devote more time to his gardening and the roses which were his pride and joy. Saved as a young boy, he loved his Lord and Savior and devoted much time to serving Him. He was a Sunday school teacher and deacon at Stringtown Community Church and a Sunday school teacher at First Baptist Church in Creston where he was a member at the time of his death.
Besides singing in the church choir, he also enjoyed singing while going about his daily activities. He had a special ministry of visiting the shut-in, elderly, and his many friends. His family was very dear to him and his grandchildren were a special delight and joy.
Survivors include his wife Merle, children: Dale and wife Marilyn of Elwood, Neb.; Loren and wife Lucinda of Chariton, Iowa; Earl and wife Phyllis of Creston; Lela of Creston; Mary Louise Edwards and husband Paul of Shawnee, Ks.; and Harold of Albuquerque, N.M.; 12 grandchildren; Philip, David, Andy and Sarah Burkhalter; Tim, Kristen, and Julie Burkhalter; Brian, Lisa, and Lori Burkhalter; Jonathan and Ashleigh Edwards. Also surviving are two brothers Arnold and Edwin of Creston and four sisters, Rosenia Hunter of Burlington,Marie Brown and Lillian Brown of Lenox, Laverne Bovaird of Prescott, two sisters-in-law, three brothers-in-law, and 27 nieces and nephews, and other relatives arid friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters Freida, and Esther, and two brothers-in-law.
Funeral services were held at First Baptist Church of Creston December 13, 1988 at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Norman Hoag and Rev. Ron Schrock officiating. Burial was in Graceland Cemetery, Creston, Iowa.
