Riley, Roy -
Funeral services were held Sunday Aug. 11 at the Salem Church of the Brethren for Roy Riley, 71, of Creston. The Rev. Charles Colyn officiated.
OBITUARY
Roy, son of Mary and John Riley, was born April 5, 1892, and passed away at the Greater Community hospital in, Creston August 8, 1963. He had been in
ill health for the past three years suffering from Parkinson's disease.
Roy was the sixth child in a family of twelve brothers and sisters and grew to manhood on the farm near Mercer Center where he was born. When a
young boy he united with the Methodist church at Mercer Center. Later he was baptized into the Salem Church of the Brethren where he has remained
a faithful member.
He was married to Verda Casey February 18, 1914. They spent the first years of their married life on farms in Taylor, Adams and Union counties later
moving to their present home near Creston where Roy was engaged in carpenter work. Two children were born to this union, Le Roy E. and Lola E., both
of near Afton.
He was preceded in death by his mother, father, and one sister, Bernice at home; three brothers, George of .Prescott, Ralph of Helena, Mont., Fred of
Millerton and also a grandson, Larry Dale of Afton. He leaves to mourn his passing his devoted wife, his two children; a son-in-law, Dale Purviance; a
daughter-in-law, Lottie Riley; one grandson, Lonny Dean Riley; five brothers, Bob of Lenox, Frank and Clyde of Creston, Merrill of Corning, and Albert
of Eagle Grove. Also two sisters, Cora Swartz of Lenox and Evelyn Scott of Nevada, Mo., and a niece, Darlene Riley of Omaha who made her home with
them when a small girl. Also many in-laws and relatives and a host of friends.
Roy was a quiet, unassuming man, a kind husband who was pleased when he had his family about him especially his grandsons of whom he was very fond.
Music at the funeral was by Mrs Elsie Riley and Mrs Cecile West accompanied by Mrs Ruth Hettinger. Pall bearers were Melvin Riley, Elvin Riley, La-
Verne Riley, John Riley, Carl Riley and Eugene Swartz. Interment was in the Greenlawn cemetery at Afton.
